| make that dumaguete, negros |
so manila is now officially out of the picture for my two month placement. Instead, I'll be headed to the island of negros to the city of Dumaguete (still in the Philippines), which for the sake of comparison is night and day. From what i can gather thru the marvelous gift (and curse) known as the Wikipedia, Manila has the highest population density than any other major city in the world. Factor that in with the summer humidity & the air pollution and suddenly i'm thinking maybe 2 months over there might not be the best thing. Now on the other hand we have Dumaguete, a university town, nicknamed the city of Gentle People. The word "Dumaguete" from the Visayan word "daggit" means "to snatch" in direct reference of the power to attract and keep visitors for good... and also in reference to Muslim pirates and their frequent marauding attacks on the island (but that's just wikipedia talking).
So looks like the new place might be a better fit. Don't know a whole lot about the actual place I'll be working at though yet, but im thinking it'll probably be shelter work with teens as i normally planned. |
