just a random entry about my thoughts on the counterculture of christianity today

some legitimate lol-age here

It's been interesting to see how Christianity has emerged in Canada to become the big ole punching bag that it is now in today's culture with creationism being sharp-shootered in science labs (I see you Jordan putting up that kickass tribute to the Hitman), the Bible being power-bombed for being deemed irrelevant to deal with current issues like same sex marriages, and the beat(down) goes on...

An example of the biblical beatdown or moreso ommission: During the Christmas season, i managed to hit up a Cartoon christmas special, Disney's Recess, and during that one hour special they managed to give shout outs to Santa, Hanukah and Kwansa. Didn't catch No mention of Jesus though, cause I guess that's like swearing now and if it's Disney, you can bet that the G rating does not permit course language.

But yeah, it seems that Christianity has gone or is going counter-culture. Here's some food for thought: Is it easier to sell weed on campus now than it is to sell Jesus? Kanye gets some good jabs about top 40 radio or corporate america not being too fond of Jesus in Jesus walks but that's the lone ranger right now to the Leeggaaallliizzeee It ala Seana Paul, the Smookkkeee Weeed Everyday al a Dr Dre Next Episode (they got the Next Episode 2006 now), and our beloved Afroman who laments about his day of nothing because he got hizzigh

Here's some thoughts running through my cranium turbo about how Christians are responding though:
On the own hand you can be a laid back cool Christian cat and not let anything faze you. You can leave the political lobbying to the more intense brothas and sistas rocking the jesus freak wristbands at the cost of maybe being charged as being complacent or even hypocritical. And on the other hand, you can defend your faith by the (proverbial or literal) picket sign and march onward as a Christian soldier and be called a fundamentalist waging another high holy war. Action or inaction, it seems that flax will follow. And there we go, we got ourselves a counterculture, but it's not necessarily a counterculture as a unified culture that is opposed to the culture it is in, but moreso, the leftovers that culture as being postmodern pop oriented techno culture, no longer wants.

so where do we go from here? Like the Black Panthers, Christianity might become the new buzzword for keeds some years up ahead and everyone will be showing their Jesus membership-card and their Jesus-torn jeans, and their Jesus tattoo, and rocking (gasp) Jesus tunes on their 8 track players (which will become cool again, just you wait) while parents will be waging campaigns to get and keep Jesus outta town cause "He's poisoning our youth!". Heh.

So what now? well I think, and backlash very much welcome here, as a Christian, i think i gotta be better in breaking the stereotype whatever that may be as a gaybashing, hate mongering, holier than thou but not really holier than tho, hypocritical, funkiller, pretentious hipster (although this one might be justified). Now finding the proper means to do that is the trickdaddy of em all. Cause hey, Hitler thought of himself as a well-intentioned dude as well and he didn't exactly spread love and joy to the world. But yeah man. Being a Christ follower in today's world just got a whole lot harder (well not really if we make true comparisons throughout history and we take the lens off of Canada). I like to talk about this stuff more witchu if interested. And when you realize that there is no proper way of ending a blog entry you just hafta go mehhhhh.

We as Christians gotta understand our God-given duty to stand up against evils that plague society.
"i think i gotta be better in breaking the stereotype whatever that may be as a gaybashing, hate mongering, holier than thou but not really holier than tho, hypocritical, funkiller, pretentious hipster (although this one might be justified)." This statement is vague, and I can't identify what road you're taking.

Yeah, of course there are gonna be stereotypes, but that's cuz:

"And you will be hated by all for My name's sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved." -- Matt 10:22

Moreso, Christ Himself said that "If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you." (John 15:18)

North America was grounded on Christianity; America was born out of men and women desiring a place to worship the Lord freely. In essence, it was a bubble for Christians. Now, Satan's tryna penetrate that bubble, by attacking our intellectuals, and flooding the media (his greatest tool) with secularism. In fact, it's been happening a lot longer than we think or know of. You speak of Christianity going down the route of counter-culturalism, to the essence of Black Pantherism; but true Christianity is not about militant revolution in terms of worldliness; His kingdom is not here.

Jesus was, is, and will always be "socially unacceptable". Let 'em hate; it's all good, cuz "He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." (1 John 4:4a)

Like the thoughts. yeah my commitments towards action are meant to be vague cause it's not my intention in this entry to post a manifesto of how Christians should act. The black panthers bit is just a playful comparison of how it's "cool" now to rock a panthers t-shirt being counterculture, and not really an attempt to say that Christianity will become cool because it's militant. But jeah. I leave my own convictions aside in order to allow internal narratives (my own and whosoever reads this) to run and think. Where i do think differently is with regards to ur last point and perhaps where i'm going with it is not the point u were making, but a big reason why many hate is because they don't know, and we shouldn't sit happy with that cause it's not all good. If we as Christians profess to know who this Jesus is (and that's thru love and being loved) then we gotta open up our arms and lives and let em know who Jesus really is about

Guess my exegesis of your post was slightly off. But on the note of love: how far can we take it? Tot he point of tolerance? Should we as Christians be tolerant of the ills of society? Good reads, I wanna see more of this!

ps come back soon. ktown ain't the same without the darbear.

shoot im procrastinating by writing this hehehe

maybe another analogy (or i got this issue completely twisted) to this situation is stuff like majorities vs minorities. whites vs blacks. christians vs non-christians.

u would think of christains being the majority religion in canada just like the white man is the majority ethnic population. but apparently the christian majority saying the word "Jesus" is like the white man saying to the black man "cotton picker" (i use less offensive ethinic slurs just so i don't turn ur G rated blog into some 14A or R rated one). so apparently now in canada saying "Jesus" is slandering or offending the minority community (non-christians...and maybe some christians too <- who knows this world is stranged).

but the minorities since they are minorities can get away wid saying things to the majorities by saying things, such as "Allah" or "Buddha" or "Vishnu" to the majorities (christians), just becuase they are the minority. this is like calling the the majorities "cream of wheat" or "white man" or "pale asians" or something to that effect. but this is ok just because they are the minorities and they r not the majority which can seem oppressive.

the kicker is this: "Jesus" does not mean "cotton picker". its not trying to be offensive or oppressive. i just think i christians should be able to use "Jesus" like how non-christians can use "Allah" or "Buddha" or "Vishnu". just because we r of the majority doesn't mean we should have to stop using that word, just like how the minorities are allowed to use their words.

maybe im just in left field right now with this idea. i guess if its totally wack just delete this.

we gots a nice little discussion going on here. That's a real good question that you put out there concerning love. And to be honest, for me to tell u what love is in this case would hardly do it justice cause i don't think i have a complete handle of what it's all about, but i'll take a stab nonetheless. Love is God creating man. Love is God giving man freedom to love or hate Him. Love is God sending his only son down to save the haters. Is God allowing man to choose evil an example of God tolerating evil? If Jesus was reincarnated right now in Ontario, would we see him at Parliment Hill with a picket in hand? These are questions that I grapple with when I think about the role of Christians today. And for now, I'm sitting, although not so comfortably, on this conclusion: Christians are not a homogenous bunch. An expression of love for one means feeding the poor and an expression of love for another might mean taking the picket to Parliament Hill. While I am more inclined to say that the first option in my mind would be considered a more important thing to do to express love, I'm not gonna knock the second approach cause i think there is value in political lobbying. The reason, though, why I like approach number 1 better is because that kind of action can be better interpreted by the receiver as a sign of love and in a way, that's also standing up against the ills of society: standing up against poverty. The second action of picketting for example, hardly seems like a loving act to the person who's being picketted against. But at the same time, can't knock that approach cause Jesus did crack a whip or two in the temple. So yeah, there is no uniform answer. I believe love can be expressed in different ways. But i hope I am a bit clearer on my stance of tolerance with regards to love. And yeah, I'll be back in kingtown on saturday. See you soon buddy
